Blue Ridge is currently ranked #33 in the world by Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. See the rankings here. The rankings calculator is a complex equation, much like ERA in baseball, but it’s the best way to rank the hundreds of teams in roller derby.
In 2013, Blue Ridge decided to be a competitive league, always vying for a playoff spot. We earned silver medals in our 2013 playoffs appearance, then secured bronze medals in the Division 2 championship a few months later. The following year, we made it to the Division 1 Playoffs as a 10th seed and remained a 10th seed going 0-3 that weekend. Falling enough spots in the rankings by the cutoff in 2015, we did not earn a playoffs spot. We turned that all around, however, in 2016. Going into our playoffs bracket as a 7th seed this year, we beat the #10, #2, and #3 seeds in the first two days. We did not win the final game, but we did earn a spot in the Division 2 Championship Playoffs and silver medals along the way. With two months to prepare for the Division 2 Championship round, we improved on all fronts and it showed as we dominated in our two games that weekend, walking away with gold medals and the WFTDA Division 2 Champions trophy.
